Get Ready to Show off Your Child's Photos
It's clear right out of the packaging that this camera was designed to stand up to tough play and rough handling. Bright pink rubber grips on each side make it easy for children to grasp the camera with both hands, and two-eye viewing make it easy to conceptualize a photo or a cool video. The camera even comes with two interchangeable faceplates, so your child can pick her favorite look.

Before your child starts taking photos, you'll need to use a Phillips screwdriver to insert four "AA" batteries in the grips of the camera. While the first few photos are being taken, you may want to set up the VTech Photo Editor on your computer. An intuitive installation wizard makes this process quick and easy. You'll need Windows 2000 SP3+/XP or newer to use this software. And don't despair if you're a Mac user. As long as you have Mac OS X 10.0 or above, you can still use the camera in mass storage mode.

Inspire Creative Development
Six buttons and a navigational joystick on the back of the camera let your child pick a mode and scroll through old photos. Between taking photos, shooting videos, and playing simple games on the 1.8-inch color screen, there's lots to do.

A built-in flash makes it easier to get well-lit pictures, especially if the subject of the photo is indoors. The flash does, however, often fire if you are trying to take a close-up shot, resulting in very bright, blown-out pictures. Inexperienced photographers may need to be reminded that the camera is not designed to focus on objects that are less than 1.5-feet from the camera. For super-sized fun, you can also link the camera to your television using the included A/V cable and view creative work on the big screen.

With 16MB of internal memory and an SD card slot so that you can add capacity if you need it, this camera lets kids collect lots of images. The included USB cable lets you upload the images to your computer. The VTech photo editor lets you or your child add cool frames to photos, stamp funny hats on people, and distort images. You can even run fun animations that makes the photo look like it is rotating or underwater.

The photo editor interface is easy to use, with big round buttons for kids to click on and drag-and-drop stamps. More advanced artists may be disappointed that there aren't more ways to creatively control output, but files from the Kidizoom can easily be edited in more advanced programs, too.

Amazon.com Product Description
Kids today live in a world of instant gratification: DVDs that skip to a favorite scene; CDs that play and repeat a favorite song; digital cameras that show a picture seconds after taking it. And while the VTech Kidizoom may not teach the valuable lesson of patience, it is a cool camera meant specifically for small children so they can experience the immediate joy of taking pictures, making movies, and playing games.

Ideal for ages 3 to 6 years, this toy lets your child explore and cultivate their creative streak. The digital camera has fat bumper handles perfect for small hands, big buttons for manageability, a dual viewfinder and a 1.8-inch color LCD screen for easy subject alignment, and two interchangeable face plates so kids can make it their own. It’s also made ultra-tough to handle the guaranteed mishaps that come with the territory. But enough about its attractive looks and kid-friendly features.

Cube World
A dual viewfinder, large LCD screen, and chunky buttons make this ideal for young ones.
The Kidizoom is able to capture up to 120 still photos or up to 5 minutes of video thanks to its 16MB internal memory. If that’s not enough space for your little shutterbug, the camera also provides an SD card slot. Once pictures are snapped (or motion is filmed), you can plug the device into a PC or the family TV with the included cable. From there kids can crop their photos, give images crazy effects, add wacky frames, or watch their video footage.

If you’re on the go and there’s not much picture-taking interest, the Kidizoom may still be your child’s preferred toy. It has three fun built-in games geared toward preschoolers and comes with a set of headphones that plug into its side. Say "Cheese!" (Four AA batteries are required but not included.)

VTech Kidizoom features:

  • .3 megapixels with 1.8" color screen
  • Double viewer or LCD screen for easy photo taking
  • Connector cables for TV or PC hook-up
  • Photo editing capabilities
  • SD card slot for extra memory
  • Three preschool games
  • Changeable faceplates
  • 16MB internal memory

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for little hands   August 24, 2010
CozInk (Maine, USA)
This is a great, durable toy camera that is perfect for toddlers. The camera has been in our house for over a year now, through many drops on the floor and even a couple drops down the stairs. It has been dragged along on car rides, trips to the beach, outside on the lawn, and survived it all.
My toddler loves the extra games that are included on it, and the photo effects you can add. The picture quality is low, but I really don't think the kiddos notice that at all. I would definitely recommend this to other parents.

3 out of 5 stars Loses Interest Fast   July 26, 2010

My 3 year old daughter loved decorating her pictures with silly effects. It's a durable camera and for the first week, we brought it everywhere we went. After the first week, she wasn't as interested in it as I had hoped. Now it is taking up space and if I were to do it again, as much as I wanted her to love taking pictures like her mommy, I wouldn't make this purchase again. Perhaps she will be more interested when she is older...

1 out of 5 stars Absolute piece of junk   July 4, 2010

If you find your kid playing too much with your (expensive) camera or showing an interest in taking pictures, this is NOT the place to look. This product (and I assume all similar items) is not a camera, it is just an overpriced toy - a bad one at that.

Two major issues: this thing takes absolutely trash quality pictures, and the LCD screen is atrocious: small, dark and it looks as though it has no more than a handful of pixels.

The manufacturer could have done either of two things:
- skipped installing a screen and sensor and marketed this as a fake camera / toy, at a significantly lower price
- used a decent screen, sensor and processor to produce at least decent quality photos - I would not have minded paying 2-3 times more for such a product

As such, I feel cheated and wished I had saved the money for a tough build real P&S camera. Your kid may have fun while pretending to be taking pictures with this thing, but wait for the disappointment when he/she will want to see the pictures on the camera's LCD screen or once you transfered them on a computer.

4 out of 5 stars Better than reviews claim to be so far   June 11, 2010

Well, considering we've only had the camera up and running for and hour or two I can't really comment too much on the durability but for a kids camera I have to say I am quite impressed. My daughter is turning 7 and asked for a pink camera for her birthday that had the view screen. We had gotten her a cheap $20 digital camera and it wouldn't even work on my computer! Never saw the first picture she took. On top of that when the batteries died or came out all her pix were lost, plus NO flash so useless indoors.

So I read the reviews on all the higher quality kid cameras and this one caught my eye. I was very hesitant to say the least to purchase with a good amt of poor reviews but there was an equal amt of good reviews and I found a great sale which was about half what the price is here so I thought we'd give it a shot!

Camera came preloaded with batteries which said were only for demo mode but as I said we've played around with it for well over an hour using video even and it is still going strong ! I don't have a memory card inserted yet and she has been happily snapping pictures and it hasn't run out of memory yet! Yes, the LCD isn't that clear, you DO have to hold it steady which isn't hard for a 7 yr old to do. Images have been decent quality so far (it's a kid camera for crying out loud) there was only one bad one so far in the whole lot and it was because the camera was too close and the flash washed out the subject. I am very impressed with the video that even includes sound. I have seen "real" camera's with video but NO sound! How useless is THAT? Anyway my 3 year old is crying for a camera for his birthday now and my 12 year old BOY is hogging it up when he gets half a chance too! I have played around with the stamps and slide show and thought they were a great addition! It's dark out so haven't taken any outdoor pix yet but the flash has been working fine indoors. The only problem I have come across so far is the "zoom" buttons are right where my right hand sits when holding the camera and I press them accidentally every time I try to take a picture.

I haven't installed the software yet so can't comment on quality on there or on the tv but overall I would give it a thumbs up! As I am typing my kids are showing me a picture of me (mom) with a funny mustache! I'd say it's a hit at my house!

I will try to leave an update after we have it a while and of course sooner if it breaks like some claim theirs has done after a few weeks of use.

So far so good!

5 out of 5 stars incredibly durable   May 18, 2010
H. L. LUSK
My 4 year old daughter received this for her birthday last fall and has thoroughly enjoyed it. But we bought it because it's durable and can stand up to kid play. Case in point: last night her 2-year-old sister threw it over a second story balcony. The flash area separated from the camera and we assumed it was broken, but we were able to pop it back in and it still works perfectly fine. In fact today she began using the video feature. Pretty amazing camera.

Pros: Amazingly durable
Fairly decent pictures for a kid's camera
video option
"fun" picture backgrounds
decent price for what you get
battery hasn't been changed yet - very happy with charge life
easy to operate
simple to download (didn't even need to install enclosed software)

Cons: video games on the camera (for some this could be a pro, but I wanted her to have the camera to take photos, not to learn video games)
picture quality isn't the best when a small child is shaking the camera - it does take a lot of practice and patience by the child (all kids cameras are like this though)

Overall love it! We took it to a graduation recently and it kept my daughter occupied the entire time.
